READY FOR EMERGENCIES: INNOVATIVE RESCUE TRAINING
Since 2024, Johanniter Austria, one of the world’s leading aid organizations, has integrated VPS Smart Glasses with built-in eye tracking into their paramedic and EMT training programs.
Background and task
In emergencies, every second counts, and the right decision can save lives. Johanniter’s challenge is to train paramedics and EMTs to act quickly, safely, and accurately under extreme pressure.
“The quality of training determines success in the field,” says Georg Aumayr, Head of Research and Innovation at Johanniter Austria. “Our role is to ensure our teams are optimally prepared for every situation. To maintain this high standard, we regularly evaluate and integrate innovations like virtual reality and eye tracking.”
Approach
Each year, about 180 paramedics and 20 EMTs train at the Vienna center. A core training focus is situational awareness – , the ability to quickly and safely orient oneself in critical situations. Using eye tracking, instructors verify whether trainees correctly assess hazards before beginning patient evaluation.
“The smart glasses allow for precise analysis of gaze patterns, highlighting moments of distraction or lapses in attention,” explains Georg Aumayr. This data enables targeted, personalized training adjustments.
RESULTS AT A GLANCE
Improved situational awareness: Eye tracking shows if trainees maintain focus and respond correctly under pressure.
Visible learning progress: Stabilizing gaze patterns indicate readiness for deployment.
Fatigue detection: Frequent blinking or erratic gaze signals overload, helping to realistically assess limits.
Personalized feedback: Data-driven insights support both trainees and instructors.
Future expansion: Johanniter plans to deepen eye tracking integration for further training insights.
